A practical 2023 workshop on building a block theme with the site editor. It brings templates, page layout, type and colour choices together in a small project. The editor and export tools reflect the recording date; use a separate practice site while following along. The recording uses WordPress 6.2 and early 6.3; several plugin limitations and future-feature comments are historical.

Places to begin.

A small exercise.

  1. Step 01

    A small brief

Choose a modest personal library or service page. List the information a visitor needs and sketch a simple reading order.

  2. Step 02

    Build the ordinary pieces

Arrange a header, a main content area and a footer. Keep titles, paragraphs and links consistent across two example pages.

  3. Step 03

    Make a compact style set

Choose a readable type pair, a limited palette and a few spacing values. Test them with both short and long text.

  4. Step 04

    Keep an editable copy

Save the project and export a separate copy using your tool’s supported format. Open it again and check the pages before using it for anything important.

Keep a copy.
