A technical 2024 talk with demonstrations of default, constrained, flex and grid layouts in the block editor. It is useful for understanding containers, widths and spacing. The final section previews experimental features as they existed in 2024; test equivalent controls on a practice site before relying on them.

Places to begin.

A small exercise.

  1. Step 01

    A few familiar pieces

Make a practice page with a heading, paragraph, three small cards and a footer. Use your own text and images.

  2. Step 02

    Compare two arrangements

Place the cards in a vertical stack and then in a row. Check the reading order and what happens when the screen narrows.

  3. Step 03

    Give the words room

Try a constrained text column inside a wider container. Adjust the gap between blocks before adding decoration.

  4. Step 04

    Test the smallest view

Review the page at phone width and with longer headings. Keep the arrangement that adapts without clipping or awkward gaps.
