An archive workshop on adjusting colour and contrast near the end of a painting. The interface reflects the 2020 recording; the comparisons between values, warm and cool colours, and overall mood remain useful practice.

Places to begin.

A small exercise.

  1. Step 01

    Keep the original

Duplicate a finished sketch before adjusting it. Put the original and working copy side by side.

  2. Step 02

    Change one thing

Make one small contrast adjustment, then one colour-balance adjustment. Compare each before combining them.

  3. Step 03

    Check small and large

Review the image at thumbnail size and at its intended display size. Make sure the subject still reads clearly.

  4. Step 04

    Keep a restrained version

Export both a subtle adjustment and a stronger one. Choose the version that serves the image rather than the most dramatic effect.

Keep a copy.
